Twittering with #Hashtags and Broadcasting Your Tweets

Written by:

Twitter can be powerful. It gives you reach. It gets your name in front of people on the web and on their phone. But it”s not about how many people you have following you. I mean, not everyone can be like Charlie Sheen and get 2+ million followers in a matter of days. You don’t need that. Just being active and networking is enough to bring in leads or referrals.

But just in case you are looking for larger audiences, this is what the hashtag (#) is for.

A hashtag is just a pound symbol (#) which is followed by a descriptive name used to broadcast to a specific group of people who are following it. For example, if you wrote the following tweet:

#TigerBlood is the reason I’m, duh, #WINNING

(Thanks Charlie Sheen for these new hashtags, lol)

Then anyone following the tags for ‘TigerBlood’ and/or ‘Winning’ then receives your tweet.

If you want to know what kind of traffic a hashtag is getting or if one exists, go to www.hashtags.org. You can also create your own hashtag by tweeting it yourself just by using the #hashtag in your post.

So let’s do a real life example. Let’s say you are a NJ Audio Visual company that designs and installs home theater systems and home automation solutions. You may want to tweet using a hashtag of #hometheater or #homeautomation. This will broadcast you out to everyone who is following those terms.

#Hashtag tips

  • Keep your #hashtags short
  • Be descriptive with your #hashtags
  • Don’t use spaces in your #hashtag.
  • Use something people can remember
  • Only use letters and numbers
  • Always start it with the hashtag(#)

There are a few other #hashtag commands you should become familiar with as well:

  • Follow #tag – lets you follow all updates tagged with #lawyer.
  • Follow username#tag – subscribe to all updates from a certain person that is sent to a group.
  • #tag message – Send a message or question to the group.
  • #tag !message – Send a message only to people who are subscribed to updates from #tag.
  • Leave #tag – Unsubscribe from the group. If your friends are subscribed to this group as well, you’ll still get messages from them that include updates for the group through your friends.
  • Remove #tag – Unsubscribe from the group and from friend messages that include this tag.
